1973
Classification is based on reduction of periarticular space by HO.
Grade 1: islands of bone within soft tissue about the hip
Grade 2: bone spurs from the pelvis or proximal femur leaving at least 1 cm between opposing bone surfaces.
Grade 3: same as 3 but space is less than 1 cm
Grade 4 :bony ankylosis of the hip
I had some HO in my hips in the past. It seems that a good saline lavage( irrigation) the
best prophylaxis for HO.
PH of the tissues, timing of ambulation, in my opinion, are among the factors plying important role in HO formation.
