Dear friends, on May 11, I received letter from Paul Manson, President of the AO Foundation,
were he informed us that Founding Father of AO, Maurice E M¨¹ller, passed away peacefully in
the presence of his family on May 10, 2009, at the age of 91.

Manson, President of the AO Foundation, were he informed us that Founding Father of AO,
Maurice E M¨¹ller, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on May 10, 2009, at the
age of 91. Maurice saw the first light of day on March 28, 1918 in Biel. And therefore it was not
fortuitousness that at Biel¡¯s hotel ¡°Elite¡± on November 6, 1958 AO was founded. Maurice E
M¨¹ller was lauded as a creative genius within the AO. He not only had great ideas but the
ability to realize them and the international organization of orthopedic surgeons SICOT
recognized his unique talents and contributions to science by naming him ¡°The Orthopedic
Surgeon of the Century¡±. His name will live on in the M¨¹ller AO Classification of Fractures
in Long Bones which was released in 1990 and has become a worldwide standard. And, of course
while Maurice may have left us for his eternal reward, his legacy lives on in the millions of
patients who have been treated according to the AO Principles he was central in formulating.
The funeral service took place in the Cathedral of Bern (Berner M¨¹nster) on Monday, May 18,
