The term adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder was introduced by Neviaser in 1945 and described pathologic changes in the synovium and subsynovium. Since that time, adhesive capsulitis and frozen shoulder have been used interchangeably in the literature as generic terms to describe multiple etiologies of shoulder stiffness. These etiologies include primary or idiopathic adhesive capsulitis, secondary adhesive capsulitis resulting from a known intrinsic or extrinsic cause, and shoulder stiffness secondary to surgical intervention.
