Nonoperative treatment usually results in a poor prognosis. Protected weightbearing is associated with a greater than 85% rate of femoral head collapse. The rates for preservation of the femoral head were reported by Mont and Hungerford to be 35% for stage 1 hips, 31% for stage 2 hips, and 13% for stage 3 hips.
